Four Saturdays I have been in Durban and it feels like a lot longer. On the one hand, I feel like I have done so much and on the other, I have just scratched the surface.
I had three criteria which made me choose this city to start my nomadic lifestyle.
Visit my dad
Run along the beachfront
Go on all the walking tours.
Today I did my third tour and again, it was wonderful. A gritty side of town but a huge part of Durban's history. The Indian labour indenture which started in 1860. We started the tour at a 'must-see' heritage center, which I will definitely revisit during the week. And then we moved into the streets to see the Indian flavors mostly found in the buildings now. A lot of the old shop vendors have changed and the area is full of street vendors selling their wares, and many different cultures all trying to make a living.
We had the cheapest, tastiest smoothie made from sugar cane and other healthy fruits added. I am astounded by how cheap a lot of the produce is and wonder how they make any profit. But just as the noise, bustle and hustle were becoming a bit overwhelming, we sat down to a Thali lunch at Surat Vegetarian Delights. I was a little hesitant at first, after all, Durban is renowned for it's hot spicy curry, but I managed to keep the sweat down to a healthy glow and the food was delicious.
The weather had stayed rather fresh, but fortunately the rain stayed away until the tour was over.
