I was lying comfortably in bed thinking about my late start at work, this morning, when I got a message saying work needs me in-now. I panicked as I don't have my Smartie to just pop into. The anonymous sms said 'can you Uber here?' I wondered if my South African Uber would work and the SA bank card, but I got ready quickly and went out to the lift to see if there was any crew in the breakfast area.
Da-ra-ra ... in my lift was one of the few people I know and he was also called in for the early shift. Lift sorted. Of course, after the long drive in, they'd found a different crew to film it so we ended up waiting a few hours before our filming started.,
The man responsible for getting me this gig was still on site so I grabbed him for a photo. I couldn't wait another 35 years for the opportunity. He was my Unit supervisor way back and is now the CEO of the company responsible for the technical equipment.
It's ironical that one of the South African cameramen on the crew started his TV career on the same day I did. He's stayed in the industry while I, well took a long journey round.
My job for the day was with a different cameraman who doesn't quite have the same kindness as yesterday's gem. But the day went well in spite of the North Sea blusters and being rather cold and cloudy. As we were recording the last interview of day, the sun came out.
A better day emotionally. Less anxiety and more confidence.
